Some of the most successful people in life all share a lot of things in common, one of these things is the skill of problem-solving...

If you don't have problems to solve in your life then you're probably not alive. Problems are a part of life, so it makes sense to learn how to quickly and effectively solve them.

Maybe you run away from problems, or even resent them or just struggle to deal with them, either way, you need to change that because the bigger you plan on your life being, so too will the problems be also...

So, since problems are here to stay, join me in this problem-solving skills article, and discover my strategies for dealing with them...

Get your mind right!

If you are somebody that hates problems, then don't! A negative mentality towards any type of problem just makes it much harder to solve. Remember, "Bad is GOOD, if you allow it to be!", how I mean this in this context is that every problem offers you an opportunity to grow in many different ways...

For example, you'll naturally feel gratified and at the same time improve your problem-solving skills. Generally speaking, problems offer you the chance to step up and prove your greatness, to both yourself and others. Because of this, I get excited when I'm confronted with a problem!...

A good mentality towards problems, on it's own, can improve your problem-solving skills...

Seek Clarity

The next psychological step you need to take is to understand that once you have clarity of the problem, you'll start to feel much more confident about your chances of solving it - This in itself is excellent motivation! Why?...

Because the brain shuts down when the way forward is not clear, and as a result you may feel pessimistic of your chances of solving it, no matter how good your problem-solving skills are. So, if you feel overwhelmed by a problem, remind yourself that the second you can see the problem clearly is the same second when that feeling subsides...

So, have this burnt into you mind when tackling any problem.

As I said, clarity is also vital for motivational purposes. A unmotivated person faced with a problem is a recipe for absolute disaster...

Small manageable monthly repayments

So, by now, hopefully you have developed a good mentality towards problems and understand the importance of clarity. Now let's delve into another one of my techniques...

Some people shy away from problems because it seems so big, but what most people don't understand is that any big problem is usually comprised of a multitude of smaller problems. Therefore, if you only focus on solving these smaller problems, then you eventually solve the bigger problem.

Think about the motto of debt consolidation companies - Small, manageable, monthly repayments! Knowing that you can pay of your debts over 5 years for just £100 a month by far beats having to repay your debt it one big lump sum...

Looking at a problem like this makes it seem much easier to solve, which again will give you confidence that you have skills worthy of solving it.

So, don't worry if the problem seems too big for you to cope with, instead focus on solving the smaller problems within the big problem!...

Take it step by step

If you've been faithfully following my techniques up until this point, then no problem will overwhelm you.

Whilst figuring out how to deal with a problem, always take it step-by-step approach, in the same way you would if you were following a recipe. Many people attempt to figure out steps 4, 5 and 6 whilst they are dealing with step 1...

This is not a good idea because each step will open up consequent steps that will naturally lead you towards solving the overall problem. So if you get ahead of yourself, you will probably eventually end up getting stuck because your plan of action doesn't make logical sense. It's at this point when most people give up because the problem seems too complicated...

This leads to indecision and indecision equals wasted time. You really need to be logical and structured, that way you develop problem-solving skills that literally mirrors the way a computer carries out it's tasks...

For example, when you exit a computer application program, the computer will check to see if you have saved your work, If yes, it then begins the process of shutting down. If no, it will then ask you if you want to save it, etc. The computer is decisive in it's decision making because it deals in logic...

Think of a flowchart and always attempt to keep your thought process black and white, i.e logical, and where possible get rid of any gray areas. For example...

You have a £10,000 debt to pay in 6 months, you could ask yourself "have I got £10,000?" Yes or No, not "Maybe". If you answered yes, then the next question might be "Do I want to use my own money to repay the debt?" Yes or No, etc., etc.

By the way, it might be a good idea to write down your problem solving processes, especially when you're dealing with a big problem. When you have perfected your problem-solving skills perhaps you can then do away with writing it down!
