Start goal setting your way towards your DREAM life!...

Goal setting is vital to really achieving in life, and trust me, I know. My birth certificate should read, Ishmail Practical, Downes...

Why?...

Because growing up (and even now to a degree), I've absolutely hated anything theoretical... mention the word t-h-e-r-o... ZZZZzzzzzzzz...

Sorry, but that's how much it grates on me. But here's the thing...

A shortcut is the longer route in disguise!

I've lost count of the amount of times in my life that I've been faced with something I want to achieve, but had the 'practical' mentality. I would be really eager to, JUST DO IT! (No, I'm not affiliated to Nike in any way!) But the result, would always be the same. Here's what usually happens...

I would have this thing that I want, or need, to achieve and then I start thinking, “I can do this without goal setting, even though I know I should... Besides, I can do it much quicker if I JUST DO IT!".  Everything goes great until I'm hit with a problem. Here's what ALWAYS happens...

I get confused and very frustrated and one of two things will happen:
  • I give up and look back at it and feel like a complete and utter LOSER, or...
  • I end up goal setting after all, and feel like a complete and utter LOSER
Either way, I end up feeling like an even bigger LOSER because it took way longer to JUST DO IT, than simply goal setting in the first place. I feel like even more of a LOSER just telling you about what a LOSER I WAS...

Does any of this sound familiar to you?... Be honest?... At least then, I can feel a bit better about myself :-))...

Why set goals?

Goal setting is really, really, REALLY, important. If you've read other articles on this website, then you'll notice I say this a lot. Sorry, but I'm going to say it again...

Goal setting is really, really, really, really, REALLY, important!
More or less everything we do, attempt to do or think about doing, involves some kind of goal setting. For example...

You want to get to work at 9 o'clock sharp... that's goal setting...

You want to go shopping on Friday... that's goal setting...

You want to lose 10lbs... Yes you guessed it – that's also goal setting...

You get my drift?...

The really 'kick-but' goal setting I'm referring to is obviously a bit more sophisticated then that... OK a LOT more! You see, goal setting has a very interesting psychological side effect. For example...

Suppose you find yourself in debt to the tune of £100,000 and it MUST be repaid in the next 12 months or you face repossession from your home. To some people, £100k might be nothing, but for this example, you're super broke...

What to do?... Emigrate QUICK!...

JOKE!... OK, let me put my serious face on :-|...

The thought might cross your mind, right? You might be thinking, “How the F@!% am I going to pay this back?”. Incidentally, that IS a good thought to have (obviously, minus the “F@!%”), but in the right context. You see...

Until you ask this kind of question to yourself, whether verbally or in your mind, your brain will not be able, or want for that matter, to entertain the thought of goal setting let alone actually doing it – PERIOD...

But, it's important that the question is asked in an open, 'believe I can do this', mind set!... Otherwise... FORGET IT!

“So why is goal setting SOOoo important?”... I thought you'd never ask...

Set your goals for the 'vital ingredient'

Just by simply setting goals, your brain is given the vital psychological ingredient it needs to give you a fighting chance of achieving a successful outcome.

“So what is this vital ingredient?”...

I'll answer this after I give you a quick example, maybe you'll work the answer out yourself...

Using the same example above, let's do some goal setting...

So we owe £100k and it must be repaid in 12 months. This is a BIG problem, however, all big problems are usually a multitude of smaller problems or issues. So, lets break our BIG £100k problem into smaller problems...

We have 12 months to repay the debt, so let's make the problem 'seem' smaller by dividing it by 12 months... that's £8,333.33. That sounds a bit more doable but we can make the problem 'seem' even smaller...

We know there are 52 weeks in a year, so £100k divided by 52 equals £1,923.08, sounds better. One more? OK, £1,923.08 divided by 7 (days in the week) equals £274.73...

So what's my point?...

By simply goal setting and making the problem seem smaller, you are making overcoming the problem much, MUCH more believable. What sounds easier? Make £100,000 a year, or make £274.73 per day...

So really, in effect you're giving your brain a sales pitch - Just like a dodgy double glazing salesman would - you know the type that end up selling you a ton of products that you don't actually need!...

The Missing Ingredient is...

When you can't see a way forward your brain shuts down, and in the case of our example, will probably go back to that thought of emigrating...

“Yeah that's great, but how do you find the required £274.73 per day?”... ????? I haven't got a clue, you're on your own there.

Hopefully, you can see from this simple example that just by setting goals and making the problem SEEM smaller, you have a much better chance of achieving it. OK, back to your question...

“what question?”
...

The question you asked me about the vital psychological ingredient your brain needs to give you a fighting chance of achieving a successful outcome. Remember?...

And the missing ingredient is...

CLARITY...

Without clarity
, your brain WILL shut down and give you that “bury your head in the sand” feeling. So, for anything in your life that needs achieving, set your goals to achieve it and have the same motto as the debt consolidation company's – Small, Manageable, Monthly, Repayments!

Follow this recipe for success!

I don't know what your culinary skills are like but I have a wicked recipe for you... the ingredients you'll need are as follows:
  • Something to achieve - the bigger and more meaningful the better. You can find this on any shelf in the life aisle.
  • A sprinkling of open mindedness - Just add to taste.
  • A handful of Desire - pick the ripest you can find.
  • Some Goal setting – you can get this at all good stores, just make sure it's good quality.
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, first add something to achieve, then the open mindedness, then the desire, as little or as much as needed. Finally, add the goal setting and then pop it in the oven until it's golden brown and then serve straight away. Delicious.

Oh, I almost forgot... the recipe makes...

EXCITEMENT!...

Set your goals for a road map to success!

You see, if you set goals correctly the finished product is your road map to get to the buried treasure. The Excitement comes from, knowing how to get there! It's no longer a needle in a haystack and also... you have CLARITY!...

So now all you have to do is follow your road map.

“But goal setting is so hard”...

Yeah I know, remember I'm Mr practical (Hey, we might be related :-0). Here's the thing though, it's just one of life's designs. Have you noticed everything worth while, isn't easy. I actually like when things are hard, sometimes, because it makes me feel that I'm on the right track and I'm certainly weary, of anything that's too easy.

The majority of people on this planet don't set goals and guess what?... the majority of people aren't where they want to be in life. So let me give you a tip...

Use the 'majority' as a contrary more often than not. So, if the majority don't support goal setting then you should do the opposite!

So basically, we need to set goals to achieve success, but...

What do you want to be successful at?...

Let's get it in perspective

Well here's the thing, though I'm pro setting goals, I'm anti setting certain types of goals before others... In other words, it's incredibly important to prioritise any type of goal setting. Do you get what I mean? NO...

OK, I'll explain real quick because I'm starting to lose my voice...

In case you didn't know, this website is about self improvement and so, listen carefully...

It makes absolutely no sense setting goals to achieve buying a car stereo when you don't even have a car yet, just like it makes no sense living in a house with weak foundations. So basically, make sure YOU have strong foundations FIRST, before you make plans to rule the world...

I've created a FREE personality test that I would certainly advise you to take, if you haven't already done soClick here to take the test, it will change the way you feel about goal setting...

Moving Forward...

Before I close this article, I will leave you with the key elements any good plan should have...

A Goal, this goal should, were possible, be broken down into smaller goals (Small, manageable, monthly, repayments). Each goal should be clear, easily understandable and MUST be precise, e.g. I want to earn £100k from property development by 1st January 2020. The steps towards achieving these goals should be clear, doable, structured and  logical.

Last thing, be sure to check out my FREE product Live Your DREAM Life! In it I talk about setting goals for every department of your life, but this is setting goals with a difference... Click here and check it out...

This really is the end now, but I want you to bear this in mind...

The most important goal you can ever set in life, is to live a passionate, meaningful, abundant, life!... Any goal that is not working towards achieving this, IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT!
